Collections of lyrical landscapes and whimsical figurative work.

Marie Massey is an award-winning artist who has been drawing and painting since she could hold a pencil. Marie creates exquisite canvases in a post-Impressionistic style using vivid color and sensitive brush strokes. Like the Impressionists, she uses ample pigment and contrasting values, to create subtle light effects. She has studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts, the University of California - Santa Barbara, and the Loveland Academy of Art.

Marie is an avid plein aire painter, setting up her easle in beautiful places around the world including on the canals of Venice, the gardens at Versailles, the vineyards of Tuscany, the California coast, the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming and Colorado, the lakes of Michigan, the high deserts of Taos and Santa Fe, NM and many more wonderful and beautiful places.

"Creating through paint is an all-consuming, thrilling and joyful experience. Focusing on a subject, designing a compelling composition, and infusing it with color, light, depth, and emotion is infinitely fun and challenging. I immerse myself in the experience of being there when plein air painting. When in my studio, I draw on visual and emotional memories of a particular place or subject.

Sometimes the idea for a painting spontaneously presents itself as in plein air painting. I am inspired by the quiet meandering of a river, the vastness of a desert gorge or the way afternoon sun highlights the curve of an arch or the angle of a roof top. Sometimes my paintings are inspired by many impressions and feelings of a place. These paintings are all about using technique to express relationships, to create a sense of distance, time and space.

The goal of my artwork is to express my deep appreciation for the beauty of nature, wildlife, and humanity. The reward is capturing some of the magical uniqueness of my subject to produce a painting that engages and brings joy to others."

Marie has a long list of avid collectors. Her work has sold well and hangs in private collections throughout the country.
