WEDNESDAY KIRWAN

at RITUAL

A solo show of original works by Wednesday Kirwan.

Wednesday Kirwan's paintings draw inspiration from a mishmash of sources including pin-up art, mid-century animation, the symbolist painters, greek mythology, and California's coastline. Kirwan's subjects are often sweet-faced women with pudgy, childlike proportions and the lower extremities of classic mythological creatures. They lounge or swim amidst a background of seductively vibrant color and patterns. Behind the cherubian-faces, however, is the suggestion of menace. Like the symbolist painters, Kirwan presents the viewers with she-monsters who are sexy, independent, and capable of a barely checked feminine ferocity. Kirwan paints in a number of styles, but is always interested in the contrast set up by creating an appealing image of dark or slightly disturbing subject matter.
